Pilates Reformer & Trapeze Physiotherapy
Private, physiotherapist-guided sessions for core strength, movement, rehabilitation and confidence
Our private Pilates Reformer and Trapeze sessions combine the versatility of specialized Pilates equipment with the clinical knowledge and individual attention of an experienced physiotherapist.
Available as one-on-one or one-on-two sessions, these appointments are designed around your body, your current ability and what you want to achieve. Whether you’re rebuilding after injury, managing an ongoing problem, improving core strength and movement control, or simply wanting to become stronger and more confident in your body, your physiotherapist can tailor each session accordingly.
At Ridiculously Well, private sessions are available with our trained physiotherapists Nat, Jenn and Dom.
More than a Pilates class
These aren’t large-group exercise classes or a predetermined Pilates routine.
Because your session is supervised by a physiotherapist, exercises can be selected and adapted according to your movement, strength, mobility, injury history, symptoms and goals.
Your physiotherapist can observe how you move, modify an exercise when something doesn’t feel right, and progressively increase the challenge as your strength and confidence develop.
This makes the sessions suitable for people who want the benefits of Pilates-based exercise but value the additional reassurance and individual attention of working closely with a health professional.
What can we work on?
Every program is different, but sessions may focus on:
- core and trunk strength
- spinal and pelvic control
- general strength and conditioning
- mobility and flexibility
- balance and coordination
- movement control
- hip and lower-limb strength
- shoulder and upper-body control
- rehabilitation following injury
- rebuilding capacity after a period of pain or reduced activity
- returning to sport, exercise or everyday activities
- maintaining strength and mobility as you get older.
For some people, the goal is rehabilitation. For others, it’s simply to move well, feel stronger and maintain the physical capacity to keep doing the things they enjoy.
Why use a Pilates Reformer?
The Pilates Reformer uses a moving carriage, springs, straps and adjustable resistance to create an enormous variety of exercises.
One of its advantages is that exercises can be made very gentle or progressively more challenging, making it useful across a wide range of abilities. Resistance and assistance can be adjusted precisely, allowing your physiotherapist to work on strength, mobility and movement control while keeping the exercise appropriate for you.
As your capacity improves, exercises can progress with you.
What is the Pilates Trapeze?
The Pilates Trapeze, sometimes known as a Cadillac or Trapeze Table, uses springs, bars and straps to provide another highly adaptable way of working with movement and resistance.
It allows your physiotherapist to use different body positions and exercise variations to work on strength, mobility, control and coordinated movement. Like the Reformer, exercises can be modified considerably, which is particularly useful when someone is recovering from injury or needs a more individualized approach.
Together, the Reformer and Trapeze give our physiotherapists a broad range of options rather than trying to fit everyone into the same exercise program.
Core strength — but not just your “abs”
Although these sessions have a strong focus on core strength, we don’t think of the core as simply having strong abdominal muscles.
Effective movement involves coordination between the trunk, spine, pelvis, hips and the rest of the body. Depending on your needs, your program may therefore involve your legs, hips, back, shoulders and whole-body movement as much as traditional abdominal exercise.
The goal is useful strength and control that carries over into everyday life, work, recreation and sport.
Rehabilitation after pain or injury
One of the hardest parts of recovering from pain or injury can be knowing how much to do and when to progress.
People can become understandably cautious about movements that have previously hurt. Others do the opposite and repeatedly push beyond what their body is currently ready to tolerate.
Working individually with a physiotherapist allows exercise to begin at an appropriate level and progress as your confidence and physical capacity improve.
The aim isn’t simply to avoid pain forever. It’s to help you gradually rebuild the strength, movement and confidence needed to use your body again.
One-on-one private sessions
A one-on-one session gives you the physiotherapist’s full attention and allows the program to be highly individualized.
This can be particularly useful when you’re beginning rehabilitation, dealing with a more complex or persistent problem, learning unfamiliar exercises, or simply prefer private instruction.
Your physiotherapist can continually assess your movement and modify or progress the session as required.
One-on-two private sessions
Our one-on-two sessions allow two people to exercise together while still receiving close physiotherapy supervision and individualized programs.
You might attend with a partner, friend or family member, or simply prefer the motivation and enjoyment of exercising alongside someone else.
Importantly, you don’t both have to be doing exactly the same exercises. Each person’s program can still be adapted to their own ability and goals.
Who might these sessions suit?
Private Reformer and Trapeze physiotherapy can be useful for people who:
- want to improve core and whole-body strength
- are recovering from an injury
- experience recurring back or musculoskeletal problems
- have become deconditioned following pain or reduced activity
- want to improve balance, mobility and movement confidence
- are returning to exercise or sport
- prefer supervised exercise rather than training alone
- want to maintain strength and physical independence as they age
- simply enjoy Pilates-based movement and want individualized professional guidance.
You don’t need previous Pilates experience, and you certainly don’t need to already be flexible or strong.
We start with where you are.
Individualized rather than one-size-fits-all
As with all care at Ridiculously Well, there is no predetermined program everyone has to follow.
Your physiotherapist will consider where you are now, what you’re trying to achieve and how your body responds, then adapt the exercises and progression accordingly.
For some people these sessions form part of rehabilitation alongside hands-on physiotherapy. For others they become an ongoing way of maintaining strength, mobility and physical wellbeing.
Ultimately, the equipment is simply the tool.
The real value is having an experienced physiotherapist help you use it in a way that is appropriate, progressive and meaningful for you.
